Masculine styles influence this autumn’s maternity collection

‘H&M’s maternity collection, ‘Mama’, is as much about fashion as it is about changes in body shape. We believe that mums-to-be want to maintain their personal style but update it too, with the seasons new trends,’ says Mathilda Jonsson, designer for Mama, H&M’s maternity collection.

This Autumn’s collection starts with a trend inspired by menswear. The look of the garments, details, patterns and materials have all been borrowed from a masculine wardrobe.

The collection essentially consists of non-matching items – both knits and tailored pieces – as well as lots of jersey. It is important that there is stretch in the fabrics as this allows the garments to grow with the mother-to-be, making them wearable for longer.

Tweed, pinstripe, glen check and classic flannel in grey, navy and black are combined with knits, both chunky pattern knits and fine. There are denim pieces and classic shirts in white and black. Details are kept simple and scarce, with accessories such as ties and cufflinks accentuating the masculine feel, or alternatively with contrasting feminine details such as beading and jewellery.

‘Mothers-to-be now tend to prefer low-cut trousers and skirts that sit below the tummy,’ says Mathilda Jonsson. ‘It works well as tops are getting longer.’
