A whole summer of Matthew Williamson exclusives, only at H&M
Matthew Williamson’s designer collection for H&M gets even bigger from May 14, to make summer 2009 even more special. Following on from Williamson’s limited fashion range that was launched April 23 in around 200 H&M stores, the respected London designer has created a summer collection that will be available in around 1600 H&M stores worldwide. The collection will be in store longer than any H&M designer collaboration before. Added to this, Williamson has also designed a menswear range for the first time in his career.
“This summer collection really embraces the holiday lifestyle. The silhouette is softened with the addition of long flowing dresses, smocks and kaftans in weightless fabric, and the peacock palette is warmed by accents of red and pink. For the men’s collection, imagine an Englishman who has travelled the world and incorporated the inspirations he has found into his personal style. I would hope to share a glimpse of the Matthew Williamson world, and to provide the perfect wardrobe options for Summer 2009”, says Matthew Williamson.
“The collection is full of colour and a feeling of happiness. It’s elegant, but in a relaxed way, a little bit bohemian with some ethnic influences. We are also very happy that Matthew is making his first ever menswear collection with us – I think it is something that will be very different. It’s going to be a great stylish summer”, says Margareta van den Bosch, Creative advisor, H&M.
It’s the loose silhouette, floating fabrics and hot bursts of colour that let you know summer has arrived with Matthew Williamson’s collection for H&M. The peacock feather embroidery on the sleeves of a kaftan is as exquisite as you’d expect from Williamson’s catwalk range, the neon colours of the embellishment singing against the crisp white of the cloth. The parrot print smock top and dress are the sort of pieces that could go straight from the streets of the city to a villa in the sun. For more structure there is a sleeveless jacket in hot pink, while denim gets fresh with mint green and sumptuous red jeans.
To dress up but still stay cool, there is an embroidered race-back dress, and when the weather gets really hot, the kimono kaftan in peacock and optic prints is essential for the beach. Williamson has even designed three swimwear styles, with a one piece for those who love the water, and bikinis for those who want to show off. The accessories, like the sunglasses, crinkled scarves, beach towels and passport holders mean your whole summer will be spent in style.
The men’s collection takes inspiration from Williamson’s own wardrobe, mixing a dapper young gentleman’s style with hot colour and covetable ethnic influences. “I have aimed to incorporate a styling juxtaposition where global inspiration is fused with quintessential English style,” says Williamson. Seersucker blazers look their best when worn with Cuban-style printed shirts, while denim comes in strong blue and vivid pink. Tie-dye sweaters come in purple and pink, while a T-shirt comes with Williamson’s signature peacock print. For the beach there are board shorts or little swim shorts, and pulling the whole look together is an accessory that is Williamson’s personal signature – a large, crinkled scarf.
