Knitwear nostalgia
Knitwear makes a major comeback this autumn at H&M. With a variety of styles from heavy, Aran, and fringed knits, to long, loose, soft and fine knits.
Knitwear originates from Arabia in 200 b C. Hand knitting has been a profession, mainly for women, since the 1700’s.
In 1589 William Lee invented a machine that could knit stockings.
In 1759 a machine for rib knitting was introduced. Since then, jumpers and sweaters have had wristlets and ribbed necklines and hems.
In 1816 the Frenchman Marc Brunel introduced a machine that could knit in circles. This was revolutionary for knitting stockings.
In 1860 the circle-knitting machine progressed to a machine that could knit fine jersey for underwear and sweaters.
H&M:s knitwear is produced in Europe, mainly in Italy and Turkey. As well as in the Far East and Mauritius.
H&M sells knitwear for Men, Women, Boys and Girls.
