H&M engages with French government on environmental product labeling
As you may know, H&M is committed to environmental responsibility. That is why we have engaged with the French government in what we call the Grenelle Project, a national experiment on the environmental labelling of consumer products.
What is this about? The project involves finding measurements for environmental impacts from different stages in the lifecycle of products and finding the best ways to make these impacts transparent for customers. As part of the project, H&M looked at a model t-shirt and we evaluated the total water use, CO2e-emissions and eutrophication impacts throughout the t-shirt`s lifecycle. This means all the way growing from cotton, to our customers use, and even to disposal or recycling of the t-shirt afterwards.
Customers in our French stores will soon be able to see these t-shirts, with hang tags that transparently inform our customers about the measured impacts.
The data and other knowledge that we have gained from this project will help us in our continued work to reduce the impacts of our products throughout their lifecycle. And it will hopefully support the development of standards for transparent product impact disclosure within the EU.
