Sharp and chic at H&M for spring
The spring collection at H&M shows a softer and more simplistic direction in fashion. It’s romantic, tailored and well dressed in a soft as well as sharp and modern way. Trend directions are numerous, as always at H&M, offering plenty of inspiration and options for personal interpretations and styles. ‘There is a demand for a new simplicity in fashion. The romantic influences are still there, but with cleaner and more austere lines, and tailored styles have new proportions that work well in combination with these. The colour range is mainly light neutrals and the silhouette is both voluminous and figure-hugging,’ says H&M’s Head of design Margareta van den Bosch.
THE ROMANTIC EXPRESSIONS IN H&M’S SPRING COLLECTION ARE HISTORIC.
And the design team have looked at fashion history from the turn of the century for inspiration. Tailored looks are updated with ‘shrunken’ jackets, waistcoats, knee-length Bermuda shorts and knickerbockers or long, wide slacks. Shirts are collarless dress shirts or chemises and jersey is lingerie inspired in fine cotton or silk materials. Dresses are sun-bleached or floral to smarter, chic shirtdresses, wraparounds and draped jersey.
1960S RETRO WITH HAUTE COUTURE REFERENCES IS ANOTHER SOURCE OF INSPIRATION, with straight, minimalist lines and a refined graphic pattern picture. Patterns and prints have African roots and are a development of last year’s Africa trend, in black, white and warm bright colour. Functional safari khakis complete the picture, along with summer classics like the polo shirt, blazer and tennis skirt – worn in new ways, because it’s all about updating old favourites with new colours, cuts, materials and patterns. Worn with new accessories too.
CONSEQUENTLY THE FOCUS IS ON ACCESSORIES.
Belts are a key piece for wearing with trousers and skirts, but also with knitwear, jackets and coats. Waists are accentuated and are situated just where they should be or slightly drooped. Scarves feature classic patterns and initials. Hair bands lend elegance to the simplest of outfits, and straw hats are either loose and floppy or glamorous with a wide brim. Bags are either little clutch bags or large soft leather or canvas holdalls. Jewellery either has an antique original feel or is a simple and minimalist piece in silver.
‘This season it’s easy to dress cool and comfortable with light and airy shirts and dresses worn under tailored pieces that add shape and structure. After all, really good fashion should make you feel as good as you look,’ concludes Margareta van den Bosch.
